These holiday gifts change the game when building fires, printing photos, watching birds and more( MENAFN - Jordan Times) LONDON - Last month, I wrote about the central role of inflation trends in the outlook for the world Economy in 2024 and beyond. Of course, there are many additional risks, which is why the forecasting community is hedging its projections with sensible caveats about various“known unknowns”. Chief among these are the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, the uncertainty about China, and looming elections in Europe, the United States and elsewhere. With respect to inflation, I offered a cautiously optimistic outlook based on recent reports showing that many underlying indicators appeared to be moving in a promising direction. Since then, however, the latest monthly inflation data (for December) in the eurozone, the United Kingdom, and the US have surprised on the upside. That has given pause to many policymakers, investors, and analysts after weeks of markets pricing in large interest-rate cuts this year. Finally, I concluded by mentioning that it would be a pleasant surprise if wage gains in many countries persisted, despite the improving inflation outlook, without contributing to a fresh, more sustained rise in prices. Of course, most economists and central bankers would put little store in this scenario unless there was clear evidence of a much-needed uptick in productivity across the Western world (and beyond). Without additional productivity, they would warn, real (inflation- adjusted) wage gains cannot be sustained without becoming inflationary. Nonetheless, I find myself holding on to the same hope I had last month. After all, productivity data arrive with a lag, so it would be quite risky for central bankers to react too strongly to continued wage gains, such as by declaring that they will maintain a more restrictive monetary policy than they otherwise would have done. Specifically, there are three good reasons to adopt a wait-and-see posture. First, although forecasters failed to anticipate the persistent weakness in productivity over the past two decades, it is only recently that they seem to have given up signalling an expectation that it will start to recover. Second, there are obvious reasons for thinking that productivity will eventually improve, even if most have given up hope. Just look at the big developments in artificial intelligence, the shift to alternative energies, the change in working patterns since the start of the pandemic, and policymakers' renewed focus on initiatives explicitly designed to boost productivity. True, the data have yet to show that these developments are bearing fruit; but, again, the gains from new technologies often take time to work their way through the economy - and into official statistics. The third reason to hold off on monetary tightening concerns the social and human aspects of the wages and productivity issue. As we know from debates about the sources of growing anxiety and economic insecurity across many democracies, median real wages have performed poorly in recent decades. This trend has clearly played a big role in the public's growing disillusionment with“capitalism” and“globalisation”, and in the rising support for more radical and populist political parties and movements. It follows that an increase in real wages would help to moderate political attitudes. Repressing wages simply because of a belief that they are unjustified would be dangerous. Will the improvement in inflation be sustained? Though the December inflation figures came in higher than expected, the preceding months had shown sharper-than-expected declines. If one examines the smoother underlying measures of trend inflation, as well as surveys of inflation expectations, the outlook remains quite promising. As for the other cyclical factors, three things stand out to me as we approach the end of January. First, Chinese economic data and financial-market performance remain generally disappointing despite stronger efforts by the authorities to support a robust recovery. Second, in the US, most (though not all) economic indicators continue to come in stronger than expected. That is a relief, even if it isn't alleviating the uncertainty among many commentators who worry that the recent positive trends may not be sustainable. Markets, too, have had a jittery start to the year. According to the so-called five-day rule (whereby a net gain for the S&P 500 in the first five trading days of January bodes well for the next 12 months), there is only a 50 per cent chance that this will be a positive year for stocks. Yes, this is far from a scientific truth. But, as I have noted previously, a positive start has predicted a positive year more than 85 per cent of the time, going back decades. Lastly, despite the worrying issues in the Middle East and Ukraine, commodity-price volatility has remained remarkably subdued. Perhaps there are some odd technical supply-demand factors that account for this. But whatever the case, the relative stability is discernible across many markets. Most key commodities, as well as the recognised major commodity indices, are down compared to a year ago. That, too, is slightly reassuring. In a recent interview with Sunday Sun, the single mother of one opened up about her experiences, including how she navigates her interactions with male fans, the challenges of filming in Nigeria, and other aspects of her career. Excerpts: How would you rate this outgoing year? It has been good. My God has been faithful to me. Your face is scarce on the screen, any plans to go into movie production? I produced a movie once, and my experience wasn’t too cool because I didn’t know my way through the market, and it was not advisable. Most of the time, I feel like I should try again, but something keeps holding me back. Maybe, I will just do that someday soon. What do you think you are missing since you took a break from acting? I am not missing much. I am happy doing what I am doing at the moment, so if the roles are not coming at least there’s something I am doing. Although, I’ve gotten some calls from producers in Nigeria, but the timing is always wrong. Anytime I travel out of Africa, that is when I get messages to come to Nigeria to shoot. Then, sometimes too it’s either you come by buying your ticket and the rest would be taken care of. Which is not always cool (laughs) . What other businesses have you ventured into? I influence for a couple of brands, and I sell clothes as well, which enables me not to go out of cash at all. Brand Influencing and movies, which pays better? Speaking for myself, the brand influencing pays better because acting is not paying me. If you weren’t a social media influencer/actress what other career path do you think you might have pursued? Trust me I think I am in the right field. I am sure it was meant for me. You flaunt a very beautiful, flawless skin, do you have your personal skincare products? I influence for a credible brand called Reggy Truevine Health n Beauti. They supply me and I get to enjoy the products on my skin. Do you have any plans of venturing into the skincare business? Hopefully. But for now, I’ve plans to start a clothing line. God will make it possible, I am sure. Your proposed clothing line, is it going to be unisex or just female? For a start, I will do just female. What’s the inspiration behind your fashion sense? The truth is, I always look out for the type of clothes I wear. I look at my body stature before wearing any clothe. Most people don’t look at that. They wear anything because it’s in vogue. You have to know your body type and what looks good on you before jumping into any outfits, and that’s what I do. How do you deal with male admirers, especially those online? Hahahaha, I am even tired of them. I don’t pay attention to them. Sometimes, when I am bored and have nothing to do, I go through my DMs, and it’s crazy. I just read and laugh. Sometimes, I respond, and sometimes, I just pass. But it feels good getting people to admire you. So, I just enjoy the fun that comes with it. What’s the craziest DM gotten? He wrote, “Choose any country of your choice, business class to anywhere you want us to meet.” I just laughed it off because I knew I was going nowhere with him. How about physically? Men must be drooling over you. How do you wade them off and control the situation? I hardly go out. I am an indoor person, but whenever I step out and get out of my car, men will keep staring and drooling. But, I will keep a straight face. This will make them see me as a mean and unapproachable woman. With my mean face, they will lack the courage to come closer. They don’t know that I am a very shy person, but I always keep my face straight. Some will summon courage and enter my DM to start a chat. Don’t you think that you are too beautiful to keep a mean face? Hahaha, Sis, I can keep face for Africa oh. It’s out of shyness. Looking back on your journey, is there anything you would have done differently? Well, looking back on my journey, maybe there are some things I did which weren’t okay, which I could turn around the hands of time, but if the chance is given, I would have done better, but it’s in the past, and I know better now that’s all I can say.WARRINGTON, Pa., Nov. 27, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Windtree Therapeutics, Inc. ("Windtree” or "the Company”) (NasdaqCM: WINT), a biotechnology company focused on advancing early and late-stage innovative therapies for critical conditions, today reported financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2024 and provided key business updates. "The third quarter of 2024 was marked with significant progress. We were very pleased with the SEISMiC B study results in early cardiogenic shock showing significant improvement in many measures of cardiac function and blood pressure along with a favorable safety profile in patients with heart failure and cardiogenic shock. There have been four positive Phase 2 studies with over 300 patients treated with istaroxime resulting in a consistent, unique and attractive drug profile across a wide range of severities,” said Craig Fraser, Chairman and CEO. "With trial execution and active operations comes the need for capital and we successfully completed transactions providing resources for our near-term needs as well as secured an equity line of credit to potentially support future requirements,” Mr. Fraser added. "Looking forward, we plan to accelerate enrollments in the istaroxime SCAI Stage C cardiogenic shock study with a planned interim data read out in early Q2 2025 as well as providing guidance on our strategy and planned activities with our oncology preclinical aPKCi inhibitor assets. Given what we believe to be strong data and market need, the Company is turning attention to business development activities to secure additional licenses and partnerships for our multi-asset cardiovascular platform with the objective to secure non-dilutive capital and partner resources to advance the assets to potential commercialization.” Key Business Updates For the third quarter ended September 30, 2024, the Company reported an operating loss of $4.7 million, which was comparable to an operating loss of $4.7 million in the third quarter of 2023. Included in our operating loss for the third quarter of 2024 is $2.2 million related to the change in fair value of our common stock warrant liability and $0.7 million in expenses related to the two private placements completed in July 2024 which were allocated to the warrants issued in those transactions and expensed immediately. Research and development expenses were $2.0 million for the third quarter of 2024, compared to $2.1 million for the third quarter of 2023. Research and development expenses for both periods primarily relate to the SEISMiC Extension trial of istaroxime for the treatment of early cardiogenic shock which completed enrollment during the third quarter of 2024. General and administrative expenses for the third quarter of 2024 were $2.8 million, compared to $2.6 million for the third quarter of 2023. For the third quarter of 2024, general and administrative expenses include $0.7 million in expenses related to the two private placements completed in July 2024 which were allocated to the warrants issued in those transactions and expensed immediately. The Company reported a net loss attributable to common stockholders of $3.8 million ($4.23 per basic share) on 0.9 million weighted-average common shares outstanding for the quarter ended September 30, 2024, compared to a net loss of $4.4 million ($15.47 per basic share) on 0.3 million weighted average common shares outstanding for the comparable period in 2023. As of September 30, 2024, the Company reported cash and cash equivalents of $2.3 million and current liabilities of $14.4 million, which includes an $8.6 million warrant liability. Included in prepaid expenses and other assets as of September 30, 2024 is $0.7 million in receivables related to ELOC Purchase Agreement gross proceeds for sales made during the quarter for which we had not yet received the cash payment. The related net proceeds after the redemption of the Series C Preferred Stock was $0.5 million. In addition, subsequent to September 30, 2024 and through November 22, 2024, we sold an additional 4.3 million shares of Common Stock under the ELOC Purchase Agreement for net proceeds of $2.4 million following mandatory redemption payments on our Series C Preferred Stock. Following these financings, we believe that we have sufficient resources available to fund our business operations through January 2025. Readers are referred to, and encouraged to read in its entirety, the Company's Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q for the quarter ended September 30, 2024, which was filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on November 26, 2024, and includes detailed discussions about the Company's business plans and operations, financial condition, and results of operations. Nasdaq Update On November 21, 2024, the Company received a letter from the Nasdaq Listing Qualifications Staff ("Staff”) of The Nasdaq Stock Market LLC stating that it was not in compliance with Nasdaq Listing Rule 5250(c)(1) as a result of it not having timely filed its Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q ("Form 10-Q”) for the quarter ended September 30, 2024 with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Miguel Tomley scores 28 to lead Weber State over Pepperdine 68-53 at Arizona Tip-OffNEW YORK — I’ll get you, my pretty! And your little pygmy hippo, too! Forgive us the shameless attempt to link the fantasy hit “Wicked” to the delightful Moo Deng . But, hear us out — there’s something the two have in common as the year draws to a close. Escapism. Whether we found it on the yellow brick road, or in videos from a Thailand zoo, or perhaps in unlikely Olympic heroes , we gravitated toward fantasy and feel-good pop culture moments this year. There were new trends, as always. “Brat summer” became a thing, as did “demure, mindful.” And for some inexplicable reason, we became obsessed with celebrity lookalike contests. There were breakups — Bennifer is, again, a thing of the past — and reunions: Oasis, please try to stay together for the tour. Yet some things stayed, remarkably, the same: Taylor Swift and Beyoncé kept on breaking records and making history. So, after a year where much changed but some things held steady, here’s our annual, very selective trip down pop culture memory lane: Lily Gladstone poses in the press room Jan. 7 with the award for best performance by an actress in a motion picture, drama for "Killers of the Flower Moon" at the 81st Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. It starts as a cheery tweet from a beloved “Sesame Street” figure: “ ELMO is just checking in! How is everybody doing?” The answers hint at something deeper and more worrisome. “Not great, Elmo. Not great,” says one milder reply. Doing much better is the viral phenomenon called “BARBENHEIMER,” which makes its awards season debut at the GOLDEN GLOBES . But perhaps the most poignant moment comes from neither film: LILY GLADSTONE , first Indigenous winner of best actress in a drama for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” begins her remarks in the language of her tribe, Blackfeet Nation. Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (87) kisses Taylor Swift on Feb. 11 after the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in overtime during the NFL Super Bowl 58 football game in Las Vegas. Valentine’s Day — a perfect time to settle into a sweet love saga via TikTok. Only that’s not quite what we get with “Who TF Did I Marry?,” REESA TEESA ’s depressing, fascinating, 50-part account of her disastrous marriage with a man who lied about absolutely everything. Meanwhile, if you're looking for a single week that encapsulates peak SWIFT cultural dominance , try this: she begins with the Grammys in Los Angeles (becoming the first artist to win album of the year four times AND announcing a new album), then heads to Tokyo for four tour dates, then jets back just in time for the Super Bowl in Las Vegas — where she shares a passionate smooch with boyfriend TRAVIS KELCE on the field of victory. Ryan Gosling performs the song "I'm Just Ken" from the movie "Barbie" on March 10 during the Oscars at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. “What was I made for?” BILLIE EILISH sings at the OSCARS, channeling BARBIE . And what was KEN made for? Not entirely clear — but it's clear RYAN GOSLING was made to play him. His singalong version of “I’m Just Ken” is one of the most entertaining Oscar musical moments in years. Still, Christopher Nolan's “OPPENHEIMER” prevails, a rare case of the top prize going to a blockbuster studio film. Will it happen again in 2025? CYNTHIA ERIVO and ARIANA GRANDE sure hope so; as presenters, they make a sly reference to their upcoming juggernaut, “WICKED.” Speaking of marketing, people are obsessed with that bizarre “DUNE” popcorn bucket. Beyonce And BEYONCÉ carves her space in country music with “Act II: Cowboy Carter,” which will make her the first Black woman to top the Billboard country chart. Taylor Swift performs June 21 at Wembley Stadium in London as part of her Eras Tour. Tennis, anyone? The game’s been around for centuries, but it’s having a cultural moment right now, helped mightily by “CHALLENGERS,” the sweaty romance triangle starring ZENDAYA, MIKE FAIST and JOSH O'CONNOR (40-love? More like 40-sex.) Elsewhere, a new era dawns: At midnight, SWIFT drops “THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT," then drops another 15 songs two hours later. The fascinating and disturbing “BABY REINDEER,” the story of a struggling comedian’s extended encounter with a stalker, debuts on Netflix. Ben Affleck, left, and Jennifer Lopez arrive Feb. 13 at the premiere of "This Is Me ... Now: A Love Story" at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. It’s MET GALA time — or as it's known in 2024, another early marketing moment for “WICKED.” ERIVO and GRANDE make fashion waves on the carpet and then musical ones at dinner, with a soulful performance of “When You Believe.” If the “Wicked” tour is in full force, another one stops in its tracks: JENNIFER LOPEZ cancels her summer tour amid reports of both poor ticket sales and trouble in her marriage to BEN AFFLECK . It’s been an eventful year for J.Lo, who's released an album and movie called “THIS IS ME ... NOW" — both reflections on her renewed love with Affleck. Welcome to BRAT SUMMER ! CHARLI XCX releases her hit “Brat” album , with its lime green cover, and launches a thousand memes. Collins Dictionary defines “brat,” its word of the year, as “characterized by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude.” At the celeb-heavy SWIFT shows in London, we see PRINCE WILLIAM shaking it off, which is either charming or cringe, you decide. Even better: KELCE dons a top hat and tux and performs for one night. At another stadium across the pond, METS infielder JOSE IGLESIAS delights the crowd with his cheery number “OMG.” Stephen Nedoroscik is introduced June 29 at the United States Gymnastics Olympic Trials in Minneapolis. Bonjour, it’s OLYMPICS time! In Paris! An audacious opening ceremony along the Seine is punctuated by a fabulous CELINE DION , perched on the EIFFEL TOWER , singing her heart out — in the rain, too. Controversy swirls over a scene critics feel mocks Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” (organizers say it does not). Olympic stars are born — including French swimming superstar LEON MARCHAND , rugby player ILONA MAHER , and bespectacled “Pommel Horse Guy” gymnast STEPHEN NEDOROSCIK , who nets two bronze medals and comparisons to Clark Kent. Baby pigmy hippo Moo Deng plays with a zookeeper Sept. 19 in the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province, Thailand. Also capturing hearts: yep, MOO DENG , born this month. Her name means “bouncy pork.” Australia's Rachael Gunn, known as B-Girl Raygun, competes Aug. 9 during the Round Robin Battle at the breaking competition at La Concorde Urban Park at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. This is them ... now: BENNIFER is no more. After two decades, two engagements and two weddings, J.Lo files for divorce. One union dissolves, another returns: OASIS announces a reunion tour. Everyone seems to want to get in on TikToker JOOLS LEBRON 's “ DEMURE, MINDFUL ” act — even the WHITE HOUSE press team. Back at the Olympics, in the new sport of breaking, we meet Australia’s RAYGUN , arguably neither demure nor mindful with her “kangaroo” move. Los Angeles Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani brings his dog Decoy to the mound Aug. 28 before Decoy delivered the ceremonial first pitch prior to a baseball game between the Dodgers and the Baltimore Orioles in Los Angeles. Cute animal alert: SHOHEI OHTANI ’s perky pooch DECOY does a great “first pitch” in his Major League Baseball debut. Chappell Roan performs "Good Luck, Babe" on Sept. 11 during the MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y. One of the year’s biggest breakout artists, CHAPPELL ROAN , withdraws from a music festival after speaking out about frightening fan interactions. And more on the price of fame: In an excruciating moment, “Bachelorette” JENN TRAN , the franchise’s first Asian American lead, is forced to sit through a painful viewing of her proposal to her chosen suitor, after tearfully explaining how he’d later dumped her over the phone. Tran is keeping busy though — she’s announced as part of the new “Dancing with the Stars” lineup. Also on the list: rugby player Maher, and Pommel Horse Guy! Also, ANNA SOROKIN , dancing with an ankle monitor. Online fandom, meanwhile, is shaken when X is temporarily suspended in Brazil and celebrity stan accounts post tearful farewells, revealing to many across the globe that their favorite accounts are run by Brazilians. Miles Mitchell, 21, wins of the Timothee Chalamet lookalike contest Oct. 27 near Washington Square Park in New York. “Dune” Chalamets! “Wonka” Chalamets! Thousands gather in Manhattan for a TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET lookalike contest, and things really get interesting when Chalamet himself shows up. He doesn’t enter the contest, though, and with his mustache, he may not even have won. The trend continues with contests for JEREMY ALLEN WHITE, ZAYN MALIK and — in a very Washington version — Kennedy scion JACK SCHLOSSBERG , who's been gathering a following with some interesting social media posts. New York Liberty Kennedy Burke dances with the mascot, Ellie the Elephant, during an Oct. 24 ceremony after a parade in honor of the Liberty's WNBA basketball championship at City Hall in New York. Turning to basketball, who’s that dancing with USHER ? Why it’s ELLIE THE ELEPHANT , the now-viral NEW YORK LIBERTY mascot. Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, right, appears Nov. 2 with Maya Rudolph on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" in New York. MAYA RUDOLPH does a pretty good KAMALA HARRIS laugh on “Saturday Night Live,” but you know who does it better? HARRIS herself. The Democratic candidate makes a surprise cameo three days before the U.S. presidential election, following in the footsteps of HILLARY CLINTON , SARAH PALIN and others. Elsewhere in television, Bravo announces that “VANDERPUMP RULES,” the Emmy-nominated reality show that has lived through countless scandals, is entirely recasting its 12th season — apart from namesake LISA VANDERPUMP . As for MOO DENG , she doesn't have her own TV series yet, but our favorite pygmy hippo is generating plenty of merch . And THAT brings us back to ... Ariana Grande, left, and Cynthia Erivo pose for photographers Nov. 11 prior to the premiere of "Wicked" at Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City. “WICKED” ! Director JON M. CHU ’s emerald-hued fantasy remains very very popular, to quote one of its buzzy show tunes, dancing through life and defying gravity at the multiplex. Moviegoers also come for “GLADIATOR II” and, in a veritable tidal wave, Disney's “MOANA 2,” which beckons us back to the seas of Oceania. AS gang violence spirals out of control in Haiti, the limitations of international efforts to restore order, including a Kenyan-led security mission, have laid bare the depth of the crisis. A nation already on its knees now faces an even darker abyss. Haiti’s tragedy serves as a stark reminder that no matter how dire circumstances may seem, they can always deteriorate further. Haiti’s revolution (1791-1804) -the first successful uprising by enslaved people-should have been a beacon of hope. Instead, it marked the beginning of relentless punishment by a global order which was infused with racism and avarice. Forced to pay France reparations for its own freedom, Haiti was crippled by debt and subjected to invasions, occupations, and economic exploitation. This financial and political stranglehold laid the groundwork for centuries of poverty and instability. Corrupt leadership, often propped up by external powers, exacerbated the country’s struggles for decades, while natural disasters—earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods—repeatedly decimated its fragile infrastructure. By the time President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in 2021, Haiti’s constitutional institutions had disintegrated. The nation was left adrift, ruled by unpopular decrees without any form of public participation, amid surging gang violence, widespread hunger, and political paralysis. Today, Haiti teeters on the edge of collapse. Nearly half of its population—5.41 million people—are acutely food insecure, and one in six children faces famine. Over 700,000 people have been forcibly displaced, while more than 900 schools remain closed, depriving hundreds of thousands of children of education. Criminal gangs dominate nearly 80% of Port-au-Prince and its surrounding areas, holding 2.7 million people hostage to violence, extortion, and kidnappings. Even more alarmingly, thousands of children are now counted among their ranks, coerced into roles ranging from looters to murderers. These gangs, emboldened by weak governance, maintain their firepower and expand their reach even in the face of international interventions. Haiti’s police force, outgunned and underfunded, struggles to maintain order. The Kenyan-led multinational security mission, a contingent of just 430 personnel, has proven woefully inadequate against entrenched criminal networks. Frustrated communities have taken matters into their own hands, forming vigilante groups to deliver brutal justice. In one chilling scene, gang members’ bodies were dismembered in front of a silent and seemingly complicit police force. As basic services collapse and desperation deepens, the Transitional Council has squandered its chance to provide leadership. In April 2024, under pressure from the United States and with the backing of CARICOM, Haiti established the Council to stabilize the country, restore constitutional legitimacy, and pave the way for elections. The Council appointed Garry Conille, a former UNICEF official, as interim prime minister, alongside a technocratic cabinet. While this initiative offered hope, it was fraught with danger from the start and destined to fail. The mix of ambitious politicians and technocrats -many of whom were not selected by the Council – set up disquiet and quickly led to dysfunction. By November, the Council’s fractious relationship with Conille and his cabinet culminated in his dismissal. In just five months, little progress had been made toward stabilizing the country or addressing the root causes of its crisis. This failure further eroded international confidence and left Haiti’s plight unresolved. Haiti’s plight is more than a humanitarian disaster – it is a test of the United Nations’ effectiveness. The Haitian government, supported by CARICOM and the United States, has called for a full-scale UN peacekeeping operation. Such an initiative could provide the resources and personnel needed to restore order, with its costs distributed among all UN member states. However, China and Russia – two of the five veto powers in the Security Council – have opposed the idea, arguing that peacekeepers are meant to maintain peace, not combat urban crime or rescue dysfunctional states. This effort, therefore, remains stalled. As violence intensifies, basic services have crumbled. The United Nations recently evacuated its staff from Port-au-Prince, citing escalating dangers. Humanitarian organizations, like Doctors Without Borders, have suspended operations due to threats against staff and patients. Food for the Poor, a nonprofit organization that manages feeding programsme, can no longer deliver aid reliably because of gang blockades, road hazards, and airport closures. The Transitional Council’s inability to form an Electoral Council or advance constitutional reforms has only compounded the crisis. Without these critical steps, Haiti remains stuck in a cycle of instability. A new prime minister, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, has taken office, but his government faces the daunting task of rebuilding trust, addressing gang violence, and navigating a Transitional Council prone to micromanagement. Time is not on his side. Ultimately, the responsibility for Haiti’s recovery lies with its leadership. The Transitional Council must demonstrate unity, stability, competence, and urgency in its efforts to stabilize the country. Without decisive action to rebuild constitutional institutions and restore governance, the Council risks isolating Haiti further, plunging the country deeper into chaos as the gangs grow stronger, more strident, and more determined. Haiti’s history is one of resilience against unimaginable odds, but the resilience of its beleaguered people alone cannot rebuild a nation. It is time for its leaders to rise above petty divisions and forge an agreed plan to achieve stability and peace. Only then can Haiti’s neighbours and international partners step forward with confidence to help pull the nation from the brink. This is the task to which all involved—both domestically and internationally—must commit, setting aside perceived strategic interests, whether personal or national. Hillary Clinton Considering Running For President In 2028? Here's What We Know
A very special, and irreplaceable, package has gone missing, and a woman in New Westminster and her family are begging for help to find it. Ashley Gould explains that her uncle Ed Bakker died by suicide on Nov. 20, but just days earlier he had sent his sister a package. “We found out [about his death] on Nov. 25 ... and when we went to clean out his apartment in Victoria, we found a receipt for a package, which had been shipped by Canada Post on Nov. 14, to my mom, who also lives in New West,” Gould told 1130 NewsRadio on Tuesday. “Because of the postal strike, obviously we had to sit in limbo. He had left the tracking number on the receipt, so we had tracking for it. And once Canada Post was up and running last Tuesday, I was frantically checking it,” she added. Last Wednesday, Gould and her mom got the great news that the package had been delivered. Except it wasn’t there. “My mom lives in an apartment building, and it said [it was delivered at] 6:40 a.m., so we didn’t think that was true. We contacted Canada Post, and they said that it’s probably going to be at a pickup location in a day or two, so to be patient,” she said. “Then on Thursday, my mom went to the pickup location, there was nothing yet. Friday, same thing. Then yesterday, we called and they said, ‘Actually, it’s been miss-sorted and it’s gone into the pile of Amazon returns, and there’s nothing more we can do,'” Gould added. Gould’s mother spoke to a supervisor, who informed the family that there was a “slim-to-none chance” of recovering the package, “but we’ll see in the new year.” “Their suggestions were to have the sender start a claim, or to contact Amazon and create a ticket,” she explained. “I apologized to the person I spoke with, because I felt bad for saying it, but I was like, ‘The sender is no longer with us and can’t start a claim, and that’s not really what it’s about.'” “It’s not about starting a claim and getting compensation. It’s about getting the package,” Gould said. While she has opened a ticket with Amazon, Gould says it’s not that company’s fault or responsibility, nor would it likely be in their system. Trying to think of other ways to find the package, Gould took to social media site Reddit in hopes of connecting with anyone who might have an in to help find the really important package. “A few people have reached out to me directly to say that they would keep an eye out for it; basically some boots on the ground. But we still don’t have any answers,” she said. “I know it’s Christmas Eve, but I’m just desperate to try and get some help, because Canada Post has, unfortunately, not given us anything more than, ‘We lost it,’ and that’s it.” The hunt for the package is complicated, Gould appreciates, as neither she nor her mom knows what’s contained or what the package looks like. “Unfortunately, because of the circumstances, I don’t have a description of the package. All I have is the name of the sender, the weight, I have the volume equivalent ... but no dimensions or anything like that, or description of the package.” Gould explains that since her uncle’s death, it’s been a whirlwind of emotions. “[When my mom] knew the package was coming, she said, ‘I don’t think I can emotionally handle opening it before Christmas.’ And now all she wants is to have the package. “She just wants to have some closure, to at least have it in her possession and know that it’s not just lost somewhere,” she explained. Bakker was a very special person, Gould says. “He had a lot of struggles, but I’m happy that he’s at peace. We just want this closure of receiving whatever he felt was important enough to send to us in his final days.” “We just want that back,” she explained. Bakker is being remembered not just by his family, but the tennis community in Victoria and across North America. He was a formidable tennis player and coach, Gould explains, even creating his own teaching method called Wild Tennis. “His contributions to tennis throughout his life are immeasurable, and there are few who shared his all-encompassing passion for our sport. Ed taught kids and adults how to play tennis with patience and humour, and his Wild Tennis program helped transform the learn-to-play process in a way that was fun and engaging,” Canadian Senior Tennis shared on Facebook. A very loving and loved, brother, friend, uncle, and more, Gould says he was thoughtful and caring right up until the end. “The fact that he had the forethought to send us this final package in the days leading up to his suicide just goes to show how he was always thinking about others even when he was clearly in so much pain,” she said. In a statement to 1130 NewsRadio, Canada Post says it apologizes for this “unfortunate and frustrating experience and our condolences to the family.” The organization confirms that it is looking into the case, and will provide further information at a later date.
Technology stocks led a broad rally on Wall Street Tuesday during a holiday-shortened trading session ahead of Christmas. The S&P 500 rose 1.1% for its third-straight gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.9%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite climbed 1.3%. While Big Tech companies, including Apple, Amazon and chip company Broadcom helped push the market higher, the gains were widespread. Advancers outnumbered decliners by more than 3-to-1 on the New York Stock Exchange. Broadcom rose 3.2%, Apple gained 1.1% and Amazon closed 1.8% higher. Super Micro Computer climbed 6%. Tesla jumped 7.4% for the biggest gains among S&P 500 stocks. American Airlines shook off an early loss and ended with a 0.6% gain after the airline briefly grounded flights nationwide due to a technical issue. Elsewhere in the market, U.S. Steel rose 1.9% a day after an influential government panel failed to reach consensus on the possible national security risks of the nearly $15 billion proposed sale to Nippon Steel of Japan. NeueHealth surged 74.9% after the health care company agreed to be taken private in a deal valued at roughly $1.3 billion. All told, the S&P 500 rose 65.97 points to 6,040.04. The Dow added 390.08 points to 43,297.03, and the Nasdaq rose 266.24 points to 20,031.13. Treasury yields held steady in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury was little changed at 4.59%. European markets closed mostly higher. Markets in Asia mostly gained ground. Tuesday’s U.S. market rally comes as the stock market enters what’s historically been a very cheerful season. The last five trading days of each year, plus the first two in the new year, have brought an average gain of 1.3% since 1950. The so-called “Santa rally” also correlates closely with positive returns in January and the upcoming year. So far this month, the U.S. stock market has lost some of its gains since President-elect Donald Trump’s win on Election Day, which raised hopes for faster economic growth and more lax regulations that would boost corporate profits. Worries have risen that Trump’s preference for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation , a bigger U.S. government debt and difficulties for global trade. Even so, the stock market remains on pace to deliver strong returns for 2024. The benchmark S&P 500 is up 26.6% so far this year and remains within roughly 1% of the all-time high it set earlier this month — its latest of 57 record highs this year. U.S. markets will be closed Wednesday for Christmas. Wall Street has several economic reports to look forward to this week, including a weekly update on unemployment benefits on Thursday.NEW YORK , Dec. 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Rosen Law Firm, a global investor rights law firm, announces the filing of a class action lawsuit on behalf of all purchasers of common stock of MGP Ingredients, Inc. WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team on Tuesday signed an agreement to allow the Justice Department to conduct background checks on his nominees and appointees after a weeks-long delay. The step lets Trump transition aides and future administration staffers obtain security clearances before Inauguration Day to access classified information about ongoing government programs, an essential step for a smooth transiton of power. It also allows those nominees who are up for Senate confirmation to face the background checks lawmakers want before voting on them. Teams of investigators have been standing by to process clearances for Trump aides and advisers. “This agreement with the Department of Justice will ensure President Trump and his team are ready on Day 1 to begin enacting the America First Agenda that an overwhelming majority of our nation supported on Election Day,” said Susie Wiles, Trump’s designate to be White House chief of staff. Related Articles The announcement comes a week after the Trump transition team with the Biden White House to allow transition staff to coordinate with the existing federal workforce before taking office on Jan. 20. The White House agreement was supposed to have been signed by Oct. 1, according to the Presidential Transition Act, and the Biden White House had issued both public and private appeals for Trump’s team to sign on. Security clearances are required to access classified information, including on ongoing operations and threats to the nation, and the Biden White House and outside experts have emphasized to Trump’s team the importance of having cleared personnel before Inauguration Day so they could be fully briefed and ready to run the government. Republican Senators have also insisted on FBI background checks for Trump’s nominees before they face confirmation votes, as has been standard practice for decades. Lawmakers have been particularly interested in seeing the findings of reviews into Trump’s designated nominee for defense secretary, former Fox News host Pete Hegseth, and for Rep. Tulsi Gabbard to be director of national intelligence. “That’s why it’s so important that we have an FBI background check, a committee review of extensive questions and questionnaires, and a public hearing,” said. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine on Monday. John Thune, the incoming Senate Republican leader, said the Trump team “understands there’s going to have to be a thorough vetting of all these nominees.”At the wheel of his little blue and white boat, Hans Unkles is used to the solitary life of a creel fisherman with just the glorious scenery of the Sound of Jura, the wind in his face and the gentle slap of the water against the hull of the Lorna Jane for company. These days though, he cuts an even lonelier figure. Gliding silently through the water on a boat powered not by smelly and noisy diesel but by solar power and electricity, he’s in a world of his own. Nowhere else in the UK or, he reckons, the world is there another commercial fishing boat quite like Lorna Jane. Built in 1979, the Lorna Jane was retrofitted to become the country's first solar powered fishing boat (Image: Contributed) And that’s quite surprising, he says. For having converted the 21-foot vessel to become a green machine, setting her to work 18 months ago and covering 2,500 emission-free miles in her, no-one else has yet dared to take the plunge and join him. If creel fishing can be a solitary career choice, even lonelier is the plight of the creel fisherman with an electric, solar powered boat. “Everyone is interested in it, they follow the boat and pay attention to how it’s going, but there’s a reluctance to commit to doing it,” says Unkles, who has 40 years of boatbuilding and sailing behind him. “ I think people are frightened to do it. “They think it’s a bit of a gamble. With a diesel engine, people know how to operate it, they know how to fix it. “And this is a step into the unknown.” Hans Unkles has retrofitted the Lorna Jane to become the country's first solar powered electric creel fishing boat (Image: Contributed) Relaxing the grip on trusted diesel and risking livelihoods on the power of the sun and the few pontoons with an electric source, is not for everyone. But Unkles can’t help feeling a little frustrated that, so far, he’s charting a solitary course. “I think it comes down to attitude too,” the Lorna Jane’s skipper adds. “My generation was responsible for a lot of the waste and overuse of materials. “But no one is prepared to give anything back.” Read more by Sandra Dick: Can you knit a bathroom? Meet the crafty islanders who did just that What makes Scottish Men's Sheds so special? Driven by an idea that there was a more sustainable and greener way to fish for what he saw were rapidly dwindling stocks of lobster and crab, Unkles cleared a space in his shed. There, he set about converting the 1979-built Lorna Jane into a thoroughly modern boat: Scotland’s first electric commercial fishing vessel. He fitted a canopy of photovoltaic cells that provide the power for the 30-horsepower 20kW engine throughout the sunnier summer months. And when the darker days of autumn and winter descend, he uses an ordinary power point on the pontoon at Tayvallich to recharge her lithium iron phosphate battery. Fully charged, she happily powers through the ten or 12 hours that Unkles requires to tend to his business on the water. He usually covers 20 miles or so, but 45 miles and even a little more is within her reach. Undaunted by choppy waters, the Lorna Jane with her canopy of photovoltaic cells (Image: Contributed) Although not the fastest at just five knots - a sedate 6mph - Unkles points out it’s not much less than his old diesel engine, costs virtually nothing to keep going and, besides, it’s fine for him. He doesn't worry about range any more than he might ask how far his diesel will take him. But, he adds, he has become even more in tune with the environment around him: “You work the tides more thoughtfully, sometimes start a bit earlier. “Because you have lower running costs, you don’t have to catch the same amount as before to end up with the same money in your pocket.” That important point partly fuels his determination to encourage more to follow his lead. “Over the last 20 years everything has gone up a gear, everyone wants faster boats, more creels. They’re fishing more aggressively. Hans Unkles retrofitted the Lorna Jane in his shed (Image: Contributed) “There are rewards from that. People do well and make a good living out of it - but I think the good days are past us. “It’s questionable whether we can carry on as we are.” Stocks are lower than they were when he was younger: “There are no regulations over the number of pots a boat can have, so when fishing is poor, they get more pots. “For all that creel fishing is supposed to be sustainable, because it’s unregulated there are far too many pots. “I have seen the catches getting smaller. “We should be adapting and looking at the future and this is what the future is going to be.” His vision for an electric boat brewed for years until battery technology caught up. After all, not even a pioneering green skipper wants to be all at sea in a boat with a battery that’s on fire. However, his lithium iron phosphate battery has less risk on that front – a crucial factor for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, which is responsible for licensing vessels. Read more by Sandra Dick: When fishing boats ruled the waves on the Firth of Clyde Pigeons once fed the nation. Now the race is on to save their doocots The safer battery meant Lorna Jane could be registered, providing a blueprint for others to follow. Rather than grapple with the same red tape as Unkles, her example means they should be able to cruise through. Having spent a total of £137,000 on his refurbished craft – including the cost of the vessel – and aided by a grant of £34,000 from fishing quango Marine Scotland , Unkles headed out onto the Sound of Jura last May convinced others would soon follow. To help inspire his fellow fishermen, the entire effort was captured on camera by a local film-maker Joe Osborn. Electric-powered fishing boat, Lorna Jane, retrofitted to become one of the country's 'greenest' boats (Image: Contributed) Entitled It’ll Never Work , it shows his local Tayvallich community rallying behind Unkles as he takes Lorna Jane apart and rebuilds her, his supreme effort to hit a tight funding deadline that threatened to derail his project and the irritation of trying to untangle the red tape and bureaucracy. The title reflects his frustrations. At one point, Unkles became so stressed – telling the camera he is “absolutely burst” – that he felt it take a physical toll. He can’t say for sure the anxiety surrounding getting the Lorna Jane over the line and the okay to begin fishing was the reason for the breathlessness and the erratic heartbeat which led to a spell in hospital. The Lorna Jane's battery can keep her running for around 12 hours a day (Image: Contributed) But, he nods, it probably didn’t help. That aside, the film – which is being shown at Arlington Baths Club in Glasgow next Friday and Saturday, November 29 and 30 - also captured the joy of finally completing his task, and the serene beauty of her silently ploughing through waters off the Argyll coastline as Unkles tends to work laying and lifting his lobster pots. Low budget and with just two people involved in making it, since its release in March, the film has scooped a string of awards and has just been selected for a Los Angeles film festival. Read more by Sandra Dick: The plus size adventure breaking down barriers to the great outdoors From love boat to sea sickness: a fond farewell to CalMac's grand lady Early next year Unkles and the film will be at the heart of an effort by the Fishmongers Company in London to raise awareness of the Lorna Jane among the Cornish and Devon fishing community. Unkles is hopeful that the thriving community of sardine fishermen along with ports with pontoons fitted with electric power points might encourage at least a few to embrace joining him so he’s no long the nation’s only ‘green skipper’. “I launched May 2023 and have had no issues. I’ve spent £300 on repairs this year and £436 last year for small things like seals. "Usually, repairs might cost into the thousands. You’ve got oil changes, filters, dirty fuel, water pumps, hoses and leaks, hull penetrations... there’s a massive list of things that need repaired over a year." In her diesel days, the Lorna Jane would gobble through around 20 litres of diesel for an outing of around 15 miles, cost Unkles around £20 per return trip. “She’s done 18 months, and 2,500 miles and not burned any diesel at all,” he continues. “We’ve had a terrible summer but from March to September I only hand to plug in four times to charge the battery, yet that’s with the boat running two or three days a week entirely off solar, for around 20 miles a day. “My running costs are small - my running expenses are tiny compared to what they were before.” Still, he is aware certain obstacles can put others off. One is the tight deadline requirement that come with Marine Scotland’s funding help: he had just five months from receiving word he had been approved for funding help to getting the entire project over the line. “There’s a lot of red tape and no real after support from the government,” he adds. Government won't do that' Is the Firth of Clyde, Glasgow’s village pond, worth saving? “They have invested £34,000 of public money. If it was a bank they would want to make sure their investment is safe and you are being encouraged. “I committed to this but feel I’m standing on my own, on the tightrope without any safety net. That’s not attractive for many people. “If there was government support there so if you run into problems you’ll be looked after and helped through, like some kind of underwriting.” Some of the Lorna Jane's daily catch of lobster and crabs (Image: Contributed) His creel fishing for lobster and crab is slower and gentler than before – he uses 65 pots which is less than others. His catches are a little smaller but what he loses on a smaller catch he gains by not having to spend on fuel and repairs. Despite that, the stressful journey to get here and the frustrations that he’s still the only one, Unkles has no regrets. “It’s easy to criticise and pick holes in what is wrong with things, and it’s not easy to make changes. “This has been the most rewarding thing I have ever been involved in, a real treat and a pleasure to do it.”

Some federal agencies represented on the panel were skeptical that allowing a Japanese company to buy an American-owned steelmaker would create national security risks. That's according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter. Both Biden and President-elect Donald Trump opposed the merger and vowed to block it. Buchanan jumped into the top 10 when he achieved a personal best of 2 hours 8.58 minutes as he claimed 11th place in this year's Hamburg Marathon in Germany. Just a few months later, the Bendigo University runner earned a late call-up for Paris when Brett Robinson was out of the running for the Paris Marathon because of injury. The national record of 2:07.31 for the marathon was set by Robinson at Fukuoka in Japan in 2022. Buchanan ran the 42.2km duel in Paris in 2:12.58 to be 45th overall. In the lead-up to the Valencia race, Buchanan spoke about a chance to overtake Aussie marathon greats such as Rob de Castella, Steve Moneghetti and Derek Clayton on the list of fastest times. "People are saying I'm in Australian record shape and I never thought people would mention me in that discussion, so I'm just enjoying it," Buchanan told Athletics Australia. People are saying I'm in Australian record shape and I never thought people would mention me in that discussion, so I'm just enjoying it "I've got a lot of respect for Brett [Robinson]. The fact that he was the first one to break through and do that, I think that's the hardest thing. I can see Australian male marathon times getting down to low 2:06 - whether that's me or someone else." It's taken years of dedication to now be racing at international level. A big year for Buchanan included victory in the Oceania half-marathon on the Gold Coast and half-marathon at the Nike Melbourne Marathon. The gun athlete racks up about 180km a week training and is heavily involved with coaching in the athlete development program at Bendigo South East Secondary College. Buchanan's mindset in training is more on effort than numbers. He raced to seventh place at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and is now in elite company as an Olympian. "I didn't realise how much small towns really get around their Olympians, because they feel like part of their journey and really connected," Buchanan said. "When I go for coffee or I'm out for a run, people will tell me how good my run in Paris was or where they watched it." Among the goals for next year is the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
