It has evolved from mediocre sales growth and weak margins to a high-margin cash cow -- largely thanks to the build-out of Microsoft Cloud and product upgrades of existing software. Microsoft is monetizing artificial intelligence (AI) throughout its product suite, from Microsoft 365 to GitHub, Azure, and more. The company is well diversified across hardware and software. It owns LinkedIn and has a powerful place in gaming with Xbox and Activision Blizzard. Microsoft generates plenty of excess earnings to pay a growing dividend and repurchase more than enough stock to offset stock-based compensation, which grows earnings per share by decreasing the outstanding share count and making Microsoft a better value. Because Microsoft has more cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities than debt on its balance sheet, it is well positioned to endure an industrywide downturn and even take market share or make timely acquisitions. Microsoft's 36.1 price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is above its historical levels, putting pressure on the company to deliver outsized growth or risk facing a sell-off. But long term, Microsoft has plenty of levers to pull for growing earnings, making it worth holding even if the stock price goes down in the near term. Aligning allocation with risk tolerance Another mistake investors can make is losing sight of their portfolio allocation. Technically, a portfolio's allocation changes anytime the market is open with movements in stock prices. But the bigger picture is to identify when there is a substantial change in your portfolio. For example, let's say you invested 10% of a $10,000 portfolio in Nvidia and 10% into Meta Platforms a year ago. Nvidia is up 218.9% during that period, while Meta is up 91.8%. Let's assume the other 80% of the portfolio performed in lockstep with the S&P 500 and is up 33.2% during that period.Here's a look at how that hypothetical portfolio would change in just one year. And even though the Meta investment nearly doubled, its percentage of the portfolio actually didn't change that much because it was offset by outsized gains from Nvidia and good gains from the S&P 500. If you look at how your allocation has evolved and are ok with it, then you may not need to do anything. But you could also find you are way more allocated toward a certain company, theme, or sector than you thought. The knee-jerk reaction may be to sell out of those winners and rebalance into other names. But that strategy can result in regret if you sell a stock just because it went up. It's better to have a clear reason for selling a stock. The best approach for addressing an uncomfortable allocation is to put new capital to work into other high-conviction areas. For example, if someone felt their portfolio is too concentrated in megacap, tech-focused growth companies, they could consider investing in safe dividend stocks, growth companies from other sectors, or a diversified exchange-traded fund (ETF) like the Vanguard Mega Cap Value ETF . Suppose you are in the capital-preservation phase of your financial journey and no longer regularly putting new capital to work in the market. In that case, you may need to take the necessary actions to balance risk and potential reward by investing in companies that are valued based on what they are doing today rather than their potential growth. The next lesson applies to investors in the capital-accumulation phase, so if you're in the preservation stage, feel free to skip it. Set savings and investment goals for 2025 It is just as important to set clear savings goals for 2025 as it is to update your watchlist of stocks you want to buy. Simple math shows us that it is far better to be a great saver and a mediocre investor than a bad saver and an exceptional investor. Person A earns an average annual return of 10% a year and additionally saves $5,000 per year that goes into the same investment portfolio. From the oh-so-tiny Oompa Loompa in Wonka to the short-lived Edward Keplinger in The Regime , the seasoned British actor has departed from his romantic lead typecast. For his most recent leading role as Mr. Reed in Heretic , Grant traps two young Mormon missionaries in his basement game of faith and horror. Green-haired, dancing orange man aside, Mr. Reed is his most extreme role to date. Playing a man who traps women in cages is as large a departure as he can take, especially when his origins are largely rooted as charming leads in romantic comedies. And not just any romantic leads. Grant has starred in some of the most iconic romantic comedies: Edward Farris in Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility , William Thacker in Richard Curtis ‘ Notting Hill , Charles in Four Weddings and a Funeral (the first of his three films with the famed romance director), David the Prime Minister in Curtis’ Love Actually . Essential to each of these roles, Grant’s charming smile and self-effacing mumble made him a heartthrob of the ’90s and ’00s. But a heartthrob is not exempt from their red flags. Like a wolf in a beloved Englishman’s clothing, Grant’s characters have always been more villainous than they appear. The actor’s breakthrough role as Charles in Four Weddings and a Funeral marked him as good-looking and disarmingly likable. Charles flipped a leading man’s role on his head, appearing as non-threatening and passive, his true motives often taking a backseat to politeness. However, for the friend who forgets rings, arrives late, pursues a woman in a relationship, and abandons his fiancée at the altar, suave and shy are not necessarily the first words that come to mind. Perhaps his most cardinal sin of all was committed in Notting Hill . How did he allow Julia Roberts walk out the door to be ambushed by the paparazzi?! Without her pants?! On multiple occasions, when given the opportunity to profess his feelings to his own heartthrob Anna (played by the real-life movie star Roberts), William chose silence and inaction. He even rejected Anna’s own proposal to pursue the relationship legitimately after he had spent an entire year forlorn about what could have been. Never establishing a backbone to communicate properly with the women he truly loves has perhaps been a throughline of Grant’s romantic career. Even his casting as Edward Farris in the 1995 Sense and Sensibility fits the bill, the price of his inactions and omissions being paid by the woman who loved him most. His most meaningful encounter in the film, in my opinion, came far too late. In the final act, Elinor Dashwood ( Emma Thompson ) realized that Farris had been engaged to and then married a woman of higher society. This was the engagement that Farris had failed to mention during the entirety of their courtship. The man was shelling out his monogrammed kerchiefs left and right. Unforgivable! Lastly, Curtis’ 2003 holiday rom-com Love Actually follows the love stories of 10 different individuals and those in their lives. “Love” is used liberally as Grant is one of the many male characters engaging in inappropriate romantic relationships with his own employees. Grant plays David, the Prime Minister, who initially resists the urge to act on his attraction to a junior member of staff, Natalie ( Martine McCutcheon ). While he presents himself as a moral politician, looking down on the U.S. President ( Billy Bob Thornton ) for making his own advances on Natalie, David acts on his attraction in the end nonetheless. While the pair ends up in a public, seemingly unproblematic relationship (for now) by the end of the film, we can’t overlook their checkered origins. The package nearly halves the available $2.21 billion remaining in Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative as the Biden administration works to commit to buying weapons from industry, rather than pulling from U.S. weapons stocks. The USAI funds will be put toward buying ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) made by Lockheed Martin as well as drones and spare parts to maintain artillery equipment, according to the Pentagon. Announcement of the package came on Saturday as the defense industry and policy makers meet at the annual Reagan National Defense Forum in California. The Biden administration has often used Presidential Drawdown Authority, which authorizes President Joe Biden to transfer excess articles and services from U.S. stocks without congressional approval during an emergency. The USAI funds are separate and will go to purchase new weapons from industry. The Biden administration still has about $6 billion of congressionally granted presidential drawdown authority, including funds authorized in 2024 and funds discovered by the Pentagon after overestimating the value of arms shipped to Ukraine. Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, the U.S. has committed more than $62 billion worth of security assistance to Ukraine. HGTV house flipper Christina Hall is in the midst of a pretty ugly split from Josh Hall that has included accusations about Josh’s money moves and even real-life car thieves . However, the Christina on the Coast star’s third divorce isn’t necessarily indicative of the relationship she has with her exes. As she prepares for the debut of her new show The Flip Off on the 2025 TV schedule with her first ex-husband Tarek El Moussa , Christina is also showing support for her second ex, Ant Anstead, after he announced a new upcoming series. Nobody can say Christina Hall doesn’t know how to stay friends with her exes. As Ant Anstead revealed his new show Born Mechanic will soon be available on the 2024 TV schedule to stream with a Max subscription , his ex-wife was quick to celebrate the big news, posting a preview to Instagram with the caption: Congratulations to Ant Anstead on his new show ‘Born Mechanic’ ... premiering on 12/13 on Max and Discovery+ 🎉 It was pretty sweet of Christina Hall to offer her congratulations to Ant Anstead on Born Mechanic . Anstead may be known for his love of cars, but he’s taking a page out of his ex’s book for the new series, which will see him renovating a 500-year-old farmhouse for his parents. The support between Ant Anstead and Christina Hall seems to go both ways, too. Before she plugged his newest TV gig, it was confirmed that he will be making an appearance on her upcoming HGTV series The Flip Off . Christina was originally supposed to team up with Josh Hall on the show and compete against Tarek El Moussa and his wife Heather Rae El Moussa to see who could find, purchase, renovate and sell a house for the bigger financial gain. After Christina and Josh Hall each filed for divorce in July, HGTV made the decision to continue production of The Flip Off without Josh’s involvement . It’s unknown if Christina will be working alone now or finding a new partner, but many fans hope to see her frequent collaborator James Bender helping her out. Either way, Ant Anstead is not replacing Josh Hall, though the extent of his role on The Flip Off has yet to be confirmed. Just because Christina Hall is able to get along with her first two ex-husbands now doesn’t mean they didn’t have ugly aspects to their breakups. She split from Tarek El Moussa after seven years of marriage following a May 2016 altercation that involved police and a gun . Somehow the duo continued to work on Flip or Flop together until 2022, despite some hurdles like the occasional on-set tirade . As for Ant Anstead, to whom the Christina in the Country star was married for two years, there was a pretty intense custody battle over their son Hudson. Anstead filed for sole custody of Hudson in 2022 (his request was denied), after he called Christina an unsafe parent and took issue with her using their son in paid content for social media.
