PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Haiti’s online media association said two reporters were killed and several others were wounded in a gang attack on Tuesday on the reopening of Port-au-Prince’s biggest public hospital. Street gangs have taken over an estimated 85% of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, and they forced the closure of the General Hospital early this year. Authorities had pledged to reopen the facility Tuesday but as journalists gathered to cover the event, suspected gang members opened fire in a vicious Christmas Eve attack. Robest Dimanche, a spokesman for the Online Media Collective, identified the dead journalists as Markenzy Nathoux and Jimmy Jean. Dimanche said an unspecified number of reporters had also been wounded in the attack, which he blamed on the Viv Ansanm coalition of gangs. Haiti’s interim president, Leslie Voltaire, said in an address to the nation that journalists and police were among the victims of the attack. He did not specify how many casualties there were, or give a breakdown for the dead or wounded. “I send my sympathies to the people who were victims, the national police and the journalists,” Voltaire said, pledging “this crime is not going to go unpunished.” A video posted online by the reporters trapped inside the hospital showed what appeared to be two lifeless bodies of men on stretchers, their clothes bloodied. One of the men had a lanyard with a press credential around his neck. Radio Télé Métronome initially reported that seven journalists and two police officers were wounded. Police and officials did not immediately respond to calls for information on the attack. Street gangs have taken over an estimated 85% of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. They forced the closure of the General Hospital early this year during violence that also targeted the main international airport and Haiti’s two largest prisons. Authorities had pledged to reopen the facility Tuesday but as journalists gathered to cover the event, suspected gang members opened fire. Video posted online earlier showed reporters inside the building and at least three lying on the floor, apparently wounded. That video could also not be immediately verified. Johnson “Izo” André, considered Haiti’s most powerful gang leader and part of a gang known as Viv Ansanm, which that has taken control of much of Port-au-Prince , posted a video on social media claiming responsibility for the attack. The video said the gang coalition had not authorized the hospital’s reopening. Haiti has seen journalists targeted before. In 2023, two local journalists were killed in the space of a couple of weeks — radio reporter Dumesky Kersaint was fatally shot in mid-April that year, while journalist Ricot Jean was found dead later that month. In July, former Prime Minister Garry Conille visited the Hospital of the State University of Haiti, more widely known as the General Hospital, after authorities regained control of it from gangs. The hospital had been left ravaged and strewn with debris. Walls and nearby buildings were riddled with bullet holes, signaling fights between police and gangs. The hospital is across the street from the national palace, the scene of several battles in recent months. Gang attacks have pushed Haiti’s health system to the brink of collapse with looting, setting fires, and destroying medical institutions and pharmacies in the capital. The violence has created a surge in patients and a shortage of resources to treat them. Haiti’s health care system faces additional challenges during the rainy season, which is likely to increase the risk of water-borne diseases. Poor conditions in camps and makeshift settlements have heightened the risk of diseases like cholera, with over 84,000 suspected cases in the country, according to UNICEF. ___ Follow AP’s coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean at https://apnews.com/hub/latin-america Evens Sanon, The Associated PressSanta Tracker The Santa Tracker – Official app brings the excitement of tracking Santa Claus on Christmas Eve to life. One of Colombia ’s legendary drug lords and a key operator of the Medellin cartel has been deported back to the South American country, after serving 25 years of a 30-year prison sentence in the United States. A short while later, Fabio Ochoa was again a free man. Ochoa arrived in Bogota on a deportation flight on Monday afternoon, wearing a modest grey sweatshirt and carrying his personal belongings in a plastic bag. After stepping out of the plane, Ochoa was met by immigration officials in bullet proof vests. There were no police on site to detain him. Immigration officials took his fingerprints and confirmed through a database that Ochoa is not wanted by Colombian authorities. The country's immigration agency said on the social media platform X that Ochoa was “freed so that he could join his family.” “I was framed,” Ochoa claimed as reporters at Bogota’s El Dorado Airport asked if he regretted his actions. The former cartel boss smiled as he hugged his daughter, whom he had not seen in seven years, and said he would go to Medellin to live with his family. “The nightmare is over” said Ochoa, 67. Ochoa and his older brothers amassed a fortune when cocaine started flooding the U.S. in the late 1970s and early 1980s, according to U.S. authorities, to the point that in 1987 they were included in the Forbes Magazine’s list of billionaires. Living in Miami, Ochoa ran a distribution center for the cocaine cartel once headed by Pablo Escobar. Escobar died in a shootout with authorities in Medellin in 1993. Ochoa was first indicted in the U.S. for his alleged role in the 1986 killing of Barry Seal, an American pilot who flew cocaine flights for the Medellin cartel, but became an informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration. Along with his two older brothers, Juan David and Jorge Luis, Ochoa turned himself in to Colombian authorities in the early 1990s under a deal in which they avoided being extradited to the U.S. The three brothers were released from prison in 1996, but Ochoa was arrested again three years later for drug trafficking and was extradited to the U.S. in 2001 in response to an indictment in Miami naming him and more than 40 people as part of a drug smuggling conspiracy. He was the only suspect in that group who opted to go to trial, resulting in his conviction and a 30-year sentence. The other defendants got much lighter prison terms because most of them cooperated with the government. Ochoa’s name has faded from popular memory as Mexican drug traffickers take center stage in the global drug trade. But the former member of the Medellin cartel was recently depicted in the Netflix series "Griselda," where he first fights the plucky businesswoman Griselda Blanco for control of Miami's cocaine market, and then makes an alliance with the drug trafficker, played by Sofia Vergara. Ochoa is also depicted in the Netflix series "Narcos," as the youngest son of an elite Medellin family that is into ranching and horse breeding and cuts a sharp contrast with Escobar, who came from more humble roots. Richard Gregorie, a retired assistant U.S. attorney who was on the prosecution team that convicted Ochoa, said authorities were never able to seize all of the Ochoa family’s illicit drug proceeds and he expects that the former mafia boss will have a welcome return home. “He won’t be retiring a poor man, that’s for sure,” Gregorie told The Associated Press earlier this month.

Follow AP’s coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean at https://apnews.com/hub/latin-america( MENAFN - GlobeNewsWire - Nasdaq) DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Dec. 24, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- BricklayerDAO is setting a new standard in the intersection of blockchain technology and real estate. Frustrated by the limited returns and lack of control in traditional Real estate investment, Nick and Denis founded a platform that merges the flexibility of blockchain Technology with the stability of real estate investment trusts (REITs). Their extensive experience in commercial real estate, spanning a collective 30 years and encompassing billions in transactions, has paved the way for an innovative model. This model not only reduces barriers to entry for institutional-grade real estate but also empowers investors by providing unprecedented levels of participation. At its core, BricklayerDAO operates on two tokens that drive its ecosystem: MRTR , a utility token central to governance, and BRCK , a value token directly tied to real-world assets (RWAs). Nick explains this model,“Our dual-token system is designed to ensure robust engagement and transparency while empowering holders to influence investment strategies directly. MRTR tokens give stakeholders a voice in governance through staking and voting, with innovative quadratic voting mechanisms that balance power between large and small holders. At the same time, $BRCK tokens derive their value from tokenised real-world assets, such as industrial warehouses leased by Fortune 50 companies on long-term agreements, offering the community a cash flow-backed and tangible investment opportunity.” The DAO's governance system is designed with meticulous attention to community-driven decision-making. From idea formulation to final implementation, members contribute at every stage, with proposals rigorously vetted through forums, temperature checks, and voting. Further, BricklayerDAO's operations are underpinned by a commitment to efficient capital reserves. Fiat accounts, maintained in local jurisdictions for operational requirements, are transparently monitored through blockchain oracles, bridging the gap between traditional and digital economies. Virtual assets, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, are managed through the Quarry , the platform's digital mining network, contributing to the steady growth of reserves while offering stability in volatile markets. This dual-exposure strategy enables BricklayerDAO to balance growth and liquidity effectively. Denis highlights,“What truly sets BricklayerDAO apart is the seamless integration of PropTech innovations with decentralised finance. By tokenising real estate assets and utilising Chainlink oracles, we bridge the gap between off-chain value and blockchain technology, creating a transparent and efficient system that redefines how real estate investments are managed.” By acquiring and managing both traditional and tokenised real estate, BricklayerDAO opens institutional-grade opportunities to a global audience without compromising on diligence or asset quality. Its acquisition strategy prioritises industrial assets with high-credit tenants, maximising rental yields while supporting long-term value appreciation for BRCK holders. Central to the DAO's mission is its tenant-friendly approach, designed to reduce costs and nurture flexibility for occupiers. Partnerships with key stakeholders create an equitable real estate ecosystem that aligns the interests of investors and tenants. Through the Bricktop A.I real estate assistant tool, BricklayerDAO simplifies opportunity identification and asset management, integrating data-driven insights to optimise site selection, leasing, and market positioning. The Masonry (MSRY) NFTs add a unique dimension to the ecosystem, offering members benefits ranging from early access to services and fee discounts to boosted governance influence. Available in four rarity tiers: Clay, Granite, Marble, and Special , these NFTs reward active community participation while promoting loyalty. BricklayerDAO's Kiln mechanism further incentivises engagement by linking NFT distribution to $BRCK token purchases, ensuring alignment between token value and user benefits. BricklayerDAO's entry into the market also marks a significant step in preparing the real estate industry for a new era of blended assets. By advancing Web3 technologies, the DAO provides real estate vendors with tools for efficient, transparent, and globally accessible transactions. Its efforts are shaping the gig economy's role in property management and investment, allowing real estate professionals and on-chain enthusiasts to engage in every facet of RWA transactions. Nick shares his enthusiasm,“Launching BricklayerDAO is a monumental step for us, and we're genuinely thrilled to bring this vision to life. We've built this platform with a strong foundation of trust, transparency, and innovation, ensuring that it serves the best interests of the market and its participants. We are dedicated to building the world's most verifiable RWA value offering ecosystem on-chain.” Denis adds,“This isn't just about creating a platform; it's about setting a new standard for real estate and blockchain integration. We're committed to delivering value and opportunity in good faith to our investors, the community, and the broader industry, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable future.” BricklayerDAO invites investors and real estate professionals to join this transformative journey. As it continues to redefine property investment, the DAO offers not only a platform but a community, a space where collaboration and innovation pave the way to a more inclusive and efficient real estate ecosystem. Opinion editor’s note: Editorials represent the opinions of the Minnesota Star Tribune Editorial Board, which operates independently from the newsroom. ••• In 1937, America struggled with the fierce and intractable global economic devastation known as the Great Depression. The nation’s unemployment rate averaged more than 14%, with Minnesota statewide unemployment topping out at 29% but reaching a staggering 70% on the Iron Range. In the spring of 1937, more than a thousand protesters descended on the St. Paul Capitol to support Gov. Elmer Benson as he tried to persuade the state legislature to pass a $17 million aid package for the unemployed. The protest fizzled overnight, as did Benson’s one term as governor. A pithy editorial written several months later for the Minneapolis Journal for Christmas attempted to mine silver linings amid the continuing hardship and fear that roiled Minnesota and the rest of the nation. It has long been a holiday tradition for newspapers all over America (although the number of papers has rapidly diminished) to publish a season’s greetings editorial from their archives. We are proud to continue the tradition. The extremely short and simply worded editorial that we share below was published under the headline “Benediction on Christmas Eve 1937.” It sought to strike a tone of compassion and community. These virtues have never been more needed. “Benediction” ran in the Journal, a paper that would eventually become the newspaper and digital platform rebranded in August 2024 as the Minnesota Star Tribune. Season’s greetings from our 2024 editorial staff and our former colleagues from 1937. ••• Benediction: “Silent Night, Holy Night.” We hear it at this time of year everywhere. It is man’s benediction to man. The song needs no words. The very melody suffices to soften a calloused heart; its simple, throbbing chords send a thrill down into the fingertips. It speaks the language of every civilized people — not alone Christians — and, taking no account of race, color, creed or other social conditions, bids every man be kind and humble. How can anyone, hearing that noble music as he must, contend himself to be cruel, greedy, mean or little — or even smug? We need Silent Night these days quite as much as ever; and if Christmas meant nothing more than its gentle whispering to the souls of men, it would be worth clinging to forever.
Movie musicals have won Best Picture before, on top of the thriving theater industry that can be seen in New York and beyond. While I enjoyed offbeat musicals , the blockbuster Broadway hit Wicked will always have a special place in my heart as a millennial theater kid. The first Wicked movie is arriving in theaters, adapting the first act of the stage show. Since Wicked is being split into two movies , none of the beloved songs were cut from the first film. I'm assuming the same will be true for Jon M. Chu 's sequel which takes place years after the first movie (see CinemaBlend's Wicked review here). As a hardcore fan of the musical, there are some songs I rank above others merely because of how they make me feel in the theater. And without further ado, here are the tracks of the Wizard of Oz prequel ranked. A big fat spoiler alert for Wicked 's movies are in order since I'll be discussing plot details. Thank Goodness Act 2 of Wicked reveals the time jump that's passed since "Defying Gravity" was belted out at the end of the first. The opening song is titled "Thank Goodness" and gives the audience a deep understanding of Glinda's perspective on the drama in Oz, as well as her personal life. While she's trying to be cheery for the Ozians of The Emerald City, it shows the true vulnerability of the "Good Witch." While she's not a fugitive like Elphie, she's stuck working for The Wizard while Fiyero pines for her best friend. And then there's all the guilt she has about staying behind and not joining Elphaba on her mission. Unfortunately, it'll be another year before we get to see Ariana Grande 's spin on that heartbreaking tune. For Good Aside from "Defying Gravity", this track is perhaps the biggest anthem of Wicked . "For Good" is the penultimate song, where Glinda and Elphaba finally get honest and vulnerable about their long history together. It's the cumulation of the entire story, with the witches acknowledging their own wrongdoing, and ultimately profess how much they love each other. There's usually not a dry eye in the house after "For Good", and one can only imagine all the heart Grande and Erivo will put into the song for the second Wicked film. Considering how e motional they were throughout Wicked 's promotional tour , smart money says that the song is going to go hard. I'm Not That Girl There was a ton of pressure on the Wicked cast , but Jon M. Chu struck gold with its leading ladies Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo . The latter actress has to belt to the heavens during certain songs, but on the stage and screen "I'm Not That Girl" allows Elphaba to show another side of her voice. CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News During this song the green girl offers some stunning low notes, revealing feelings of insecurity and unrequited love. She's convinced Fiyero could never love someone like her, and the song's delicate orchestration is in stark juxtaposition to belty tracks like "All Good Deeds" or "Defying Gravity." Dancing Through Life "Dancing Through Life" is a fan favorite song from Wicked , one that involves the whole company and allows most of the principal cast to get solos. While first and foremost the song is Fiyero's big solo in Act 1, it also ends up being a narrative game changer for the entire story. Because after having an antagonistic relationship since being stuck together as Shiz roommates, Elphaba and Glinda come together for the first time at the end of "Dancing." Glinda realizes how much she's hurt the future Wicked Witch, and they dance together in a moment of silent, moving solidarity. The Wicked With of the East "The Wicked Witch of the East" is Wicked 's version of a B-side. Because while it's part of the Broadway musical, it's noticeably missing from the cast recording. That's presumably because it offers some big spoilers, and there's also dialogue in between each vocal solo. But it's also one of my favorite parts of the show, and I'm so eager to see it on the big screen. In this song Elphaba travels home to Munchkinland, where her sister Nessa is sitting as Governor. They argue about her actions as the "wicked" witch, as well as their childhood and relationship. The song also involved Boq, and things go from tense to tragic once the magic of The Grimmerie is involved. Emotions are high for everyone involved, and it never fails to take my breath away. Defying Gravity This one is perhaps the most well-known song from Wicked . "Defying Gravity" is the closing moment of Act 1 of the show, as well as Jon M. Chu's corresponding first movie. After being withdrawn throughout the story so far, Elphaba finally stands in her power, and takes a stand against the treachery of The Wizard. The song is a true power ballad, and is a magical experience for audiences. On both the stage and screen she takes flight, belting to the heavens at her enemies below her. It all ends with a final battle cry, making it clear that the Elphie we knew is no more. As Long As You're Mine While Glinda has her eyes on Fiyero immediately, it's clear that he also has a connection to Elphaba. Midway through the show's second act, they finally act on that attraction and flee into the woods together. "As Long As You're Mine" is the main love song of Wicked , and has the most romantic musical lyrics of the piece. And seeing the green girl finally feeling sexy and wanted is usually an emotional experience for audiences as well. Their honeymoon phase is so sweet... while it lasts. Finale The finale of Wicked brings the audience back to where the story all started. Glinda is with her fellow Ozians after Elphaba's apparent death. While the ensemble once again sings about the "good news" about her death, we now understand just how close the pair of witches were. Glinda is left utterly heartbroken, mourning privately as those around her celebrate Elphaba being killed by Dorothy. And the audience is also privy to information she doesn't about what really went down with her best friend. Seriously, what a gut punch to leave the story on. The Wizard And I "The Wizard and I" is Elphaba's first big number, and is a classic musical theater "I Want" song. The audience learns who she is and what her goals are, specifically the hopes of being accepted and even "de-greenified" by The Wizard. The young student stands in stark juxtaposition to the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz , and it's hard not be swept up by its soaring melody and orhestrtion. Each Elphaba sings this song a little differently, with vocal choices helping to elicit strong emotions from musical theater fans. One Short Day While most of the first Wicked movie (and Act 1 of its stage musical) are set at Shiz University, the two leading ladies eventually depart for the Emerald City after an invitation comes from The Wizard himself. The full ensemble number "One Short Day" follows, which is a fun way to introduce the fan-favorite location from The Wizard of Oz. But the song ends on a surprisingly touching moment, where Glinda and Elphaba affirm that they've become each other's best friend. I'm not crying, you're crying. Popular "Popular" is Glinda's signature song from Wicked , and is arguably the funniest scene in the entire story. She's basically a cartoon character in this sequence, having an over-the-top slumber party with her new bestie Elphie, and assuring her she'd help make her (almost) as popular as her. As funny as "Popular" is, there are some very touching moments. Particularly the one where Glinda puts a pink flower in Elphaba's hair and tells her that she's beautiful. It's clear that the green gal has never heard that before, which is why she runs out of the room. No One Mourns the Wicked In the opening number "No One Mourns the Wicked" citizens of Oz celebrate the news that Dorothy killed the Wicked Witch of the West. The song is a very energetic way to start the story, and even the opening notes have a way of making hardcore fans emotional. Seeing Elphaba's tragic backstory tugs at the heart strings, especially the way her father rejected her as an infant. And after seeing the story in its full, Glinda's reaction to all the chatter is all the more heartbreaking. No Good Deed Things go downhill in the second half of Wicked , and the drama surrounding Elphaba goes from bad to worse. And after losing several of her loved ones and realizing that the world would never understand her, she finally declares herself to be "wicked" during "No Good Deed." Seeing Elphaba's age finally take control is a powerful experience, as is the brief moments of stillness as she mourns who she's lost. She frantically tries to save Fiyero's life with spell, before declaring that she'd never do another good deed again, as none of them go unpunished. What Is This Feeling? While Glinda and Elphaba become best friends, they don't start off that way. Instead they're stuck together as roommates, and instantly having a feeling of "loathing" toward each other. That's when "What Is This Feeling?" comes in, as the students of Shiz rally around the blonde witch. It's a super fun song, with the Elphaba and Glinda trading barbs, and eventually inspire those around them to join the conflict. Unfortunately it would take a few more scenes before they meet eye to eye. Something Bad This might be the least beloved song from Wicked . "Something Bad" is the one and only vocal feature for Dr. Dillamond, who warns Elphaba about animals being silenced throughout Oz. But she is a believer in The Wizard at this point, and thinks that he might be able to help. In the movie, Peter Dinklage voices the character and is shown speaking to an underground group of animals. It's the first hint that there's darkness in this story, even if it's not the catchiest song in the piece. A Sentimental Man This song might be short, but it's essential into understanding The Wizard and his conflict with Elphaba in Wicked . "A Sentimental Man" is his first big song, where he explains that he always wanted a family, but instead ended up ruling over Oz. It's touching to see the softer side of The Wizard before his villainous intentions are revealed. Additionally, his line to Elphaba saying "everyone deserves a chance to fly" would end up being repeated by her during "Defying Gravity". March of the Witch Hunters One of the final songs in Wicked is "March of the Witch Hunters", where a mob of angry Ozians get together in order to hunt down and kill Elphaba. It's an furious song, one that features a number of key connections to the events of The Wizard of Oz . I don't want to give all of the spoilers away, but seeing the way Elphaba is villainized for trying to save those around her is definitely heartbreaking to see. So while the march is a quick song, it has an impact. Dear Old Shiz The first half of Wicked largely takes place at Shiz University, so naturally composer Stephen Schwartz wrote a choral arrangement to introduce us to that location. Enter "Dear Old Shiz", which is typically sung a cappella by the company. While "Dear Old Shiz" definitely has its place in the story (and its fun to hear Glinda hit that high note at the end), it doesn't have the same emotional punch as many of the other songs. Wonderful "Wonderful" is the Wizard's second big song, and its a duet where he tries to once again connect with Elphaba in the mist of her ongoing rebellion against him. He waxes poetic about real-world politics, and how he's using them (and spin) to keep himself in power and unite the people of Oz. Unfortunately, their brief moment of dancing and joy is quickly ruined. She finds a now-mute Dr. Dillamond, and she ends up vowing to fight The Wizard until the day of her death. Yikes. The first Wicked is in theaters now, and the sequel will follow November 21st, 2025. For now, check the 2025 movie release dates .
Washington State wins 76-68 against Northern IowaAs we patiently waited with others for the elevator to arrive on the ground floor of the Nigerian Mission to the United Nations in New York on a September morning (only one of the elevators was working!), a few people who recognized him seemed to gasp as they realized that such an eminent global citizen and former head of the Mission was standing there unassumingly. That was Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, global diplomat, statesman, retired professor of International Relations, ex-Under Secretary-General (Political) of the United Nations, ex-External Affairs Minister, ex-Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, immediate past Chief of Staff to the President, Ilorin prince, gentleman extraordinaire, and one of the humblest (global) eminent persons you will ever encounter. We were at the Nigerian Mission House on Kudirat Abiola Corner, Second Avenue, New York, last September, the week preceding the United Nations General Assembly, to inquire about connecting with two visiting African heads of state. More precisely, Professor Gambari was with me at the Nigerian Mission to help facilitate an invitation for the two African leaders to visit my university. Since he left the Mission in late 1999, he had avoided, as much as possible, causing a “distraction” by visiting the imposing Mission house. But he did so that day for my sake. That’s the measure of the man. He would often go to any length to help anyone who needed his help. And he would do so as elegantly, smoothly, or inconspicuously as the occasion demanded. Indeed, Gambari’s modesty is legendary. Though the underlying aim of this tribute is to ask that the tireless, peripatetic, and newly minted octogenarian, who celebrated his 80 th on November 24, be put to further service, I would like to place my personal experience of the life and times of this immensely considerate man in some context to not only re-emphasize his global eminence but also to underscore his good-nature and generosity of spirit. Indeed, much more can be added to the glowing tributes already rendered. Yet, there is no need to repeat what they eloquently attested to in a late tribute as this. Still, it is necessary to contextualize the present request that comes in the guise of a tribute. Gambari’s accomplishments have already been exhibited, acknowledged, celebrated, and cataloged by the United Nations, African Union, and ECOWAS, and in Nigeria, South Africa, Myanmar, Sudan, etc. And he continues to be honoured for his contributions to global peace and security. Indeed, Gambari brought a calm intensity to the meticulous and often veiled art of diplomacy and international relations. As he worked in the halls of the United Nations and presidential palaces around the world, negotiating complicated or convoluted deals either with probable or improbable leaders, some of them wily and cruelly recalcitrant (like General Sani Abacha, the Myanmar Generals, and the ex-Sudanese dictator, Omar al-Bashir), some graceful or gracefully detached, and some others haughtily imperious or dismissive (like Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice), what he brought to bear on his multivarious tasks was not only deep knowledge and diplomatic savvy, but also personal convictions and refinement. He was not only part of that golden era of Nigeria’s foreign policy making and implementation when the nation, despite being under the reign of soldiers, exerted itself in the subregion, the continent, and the world at large, but he also translated and effectively deployed his experience when he joined the United Nations. Even in periods that were not his finest moments, such as defending Nigeria in the global forum under the homicidal regime of General Abacha, he tried not to be an obnoxious reflection of the despicable general he was representing. Over the last three decades, I have witnessed the respect he has attracted in his personal and professional life. For instance, when President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration replaced him as the Head of Nigeria’s Mission at the United Nations in late 1999, I was in New York on a fellowship at the New School for Social Research (briefly renamed New School University). Professor Gambari invited me to every one of the countless farewell cocktails or dinners held in his honour by his colleagues. Almost every head of the diplomatic mission manoeuvred to find a date to host Gambari. From the most exclusive dinner in the beautiful penthouse home of the Lichtenstein envoy to the UN, to which only about 12 of us were invited, including the Dean of UN Ambassadors and the ambassadors of the US, Canada, and Gambari’s most graceful and even more self-effacing wife to the larger dinner hosted by African permanent representatives to the UN, and another by the Nigerian Mission attended by the Secretary-General of the UN, Kofi Annan, the testimonies to Gambari’s effectiveness as Nigeria’s ambassador to the global forum, the depth and breadth of the relationships he cultivated, and his immense contributions to global peace and security were not only heartwarming, they made one proud to share his national identity. However, such was the high number of invitations to dinners and cocktails that Gambari received and to which he invited me along that I was afraid that my academic fellowship in New York ran the risk of turning into an excuse for gastronomical excursions – and excess. And that I might, at the end of the dinners, find it difficult to return to my more proletarian tastes. I found some excuses to miss a few, which Gambari diplomatically accepted. What is remarkable about the Ilorin prince is that he is as comfortable in the hallowed halls of the UN and among global leaders as he is in the world’s remotest parts and among everyday folks. Even those young enough to be his sons, Gambari calls “brothers” and not just “friends.” And he shares with his younger “brothers” some of his intriguing experiences around the world, the sweetest of which he sometimes narrates in his inimitable Ilorin-Yoruba accent. Such was the nature of his accomplishments that about 30 years ago, my friend, Laolu Akande, arguably Nigeria’s most effective education reporter and later editor and recently vice-presidential spokesman, embarked on a project of writing Gambari’s biography during our years as reporters. Recently, Laolu and I reflected that the man was “only” 50 when we were already persuaded that he deserved a biography. Since then, we have had the privilege to know the man genuinely. I recall an occasion around 1995 when he and his now late former student-turned-friend, Mr. Wale Adeeyo, stopped over to see Laolu and I at the Tribune house in Imalefalafia, Ibadan. The two were on a trip to some place outside Ibadan when we called to request a brief chat regarding our book project. When they arrived at the Tribune house, we couldn’t find a suitable space in Tribune to host them. He then asked that we get into the car to find a suitable space. A few minutes later, as we drove towards the back entrance of Liberty Stadium, Adeeko, who loathed wasting others or his own time, suggested that they shouldn’t drive us too far away from our office and that they stopped to find a place to chat briefly. Adeeyo, who knew the modesty of his former teacher too well, requested from a woman selling some odds and ends by the roadside if we could sit on her spare bench for a while. She obliged. Gambari sat there with us for a short interview. When we were done, Adeeyo gave the woman a generous gift. The woman could not have imagined that the man sharing her bench was Nigeria’s permanent representative at the United Nations. By the way, please do not ask me what happened to the book we were writing. As anyone who has worked in this line of business would attest, some of the most critical writing projects risk regretful abandonment. This brings me to the primary purpose of this tribute: a modest proposal. Given Gambari’s experience, unceasing readiness to serve his country, and the current state of Nigeria’s international reputation and diplomatic influence, President Bola Tinubu’s administration would be well-served to leverage these. For instance, the President can set up an Eminent Persons Foreign Policy Advisory Board comprising the three most distinguished Nigerian diplomats alive today: Professor Ibrahim Gambari, former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and former Minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi. These three can suggest the most transformative steps that can be taken to reinvigorate Nigeria’s international influence. Even without the attendant blessings of excess crude dollars of the past that helped in leveraging Nigeria’s regional, continental, and global influence, the President could restore the glorious years of Nigeria’s foreign policy if he listened to the counsel of these three great men. Meanwhile, in whatever part of the world this felicitation finds Gambari, here’s a belated happy 80 th birthday! Get real-time news updates from Tribune Online!
